D-DAY
D-Day was the turning point of the war for the Allies.
It was an attack on a German beach that heavily fortified by the Axis forces, on June 6, 1944. The operation was supposed to catch the German forces by surprise.
During that time there was low tides and unpredictable weather which made the German high command completely kick the thought of an american attack out of there heads. It was so unpredictable that even the highest command ,Rommel, was out celebrating his wife's birthday.
The attack began with allied paratroopers parachuting behind the enemy lines how secured key bridges and crossroads that covered flanks of the landing zone that was extremely important.
They attacked many beaches during this attack but the most historically important was Omaha Beach. Air bombardments had little to no effect on the German defenses which cause the foot soldier to have a very difficult time attempting to move forward which also cause a lot of casualties. The fierce resistance included cliff top bunkers that fired many bullets and explosive shells onto american soldiers as soon as the ramp to their transport boat fell. Tanks were very important to this operation but most were stopped before they even reached the beach, most of them sank in the rough seas. Omaha beach caused more than 2000 casualties.
As all of this fighting on the beaches happened, U.S. got help from some british pilots who were strategically bombarding German territories. In the end it was a very strategical fight between the axis and allies that ended up being won by the allies. The foot soldiers eventually over took the cliff top bunkers and out flanked everyone and the beaches were able to be used to ave an advantage on the Germans
